How to Get Renters Insurance

Renters insurance is required for all Swift tenants. It's one of those things that sounds like a hassle but takes about ten minutes to set up — and it's worth having.

What Is Renters Insurance?

Renters insurance covers your personal belongings if something goes wrong — theft, fire, water damage, and more. It also covers personal liability, meaning if someone gets hurt in your home, you're protected.

Swift's insurance covers the building itself. Renters insurance covers everything inside it that belongs to you.

What You're Required to Have

Your lease requires you to carry active renters insurance for the full duration of your tenancy. At minimum you'll need:

  • Personal property coverage — covers your stuff
  • Personal liability coverage — covers you if someone is injured in your home
  • A policy that stays active from move-in to move-out

How to Get It

Renters insurance is widely available and typically cheap — most policies run $10–$20 per month.

A few easy options:

  • Your current insurance provider — if you're already on a family auto or home policy, ask about adding renters coverage. It's often discounted.
  • Buildium/Resident Portal — fast to set up, low cost. Available in your resident portal.
  • State Farm, USAA, or Nationwide — all offer straightforward renters policies online.
  • Your bank or credit union — many offer renters insurance directly or through a partner.

What to Do Once You Have It

Once your policy is active, upload proof of coverage before or at move-in to your Resident Portal. A declarations page or a screenshot of your active policy works fine.

If your policy renews or changes at any point during your lease, send us the updated info.

Can Housemates Share a Policy?

Some insurers allow roommates to be added to a single policy. It can save money but means your coverage is shared. Our recommendation is to check with your provider — but having your own individual policy is always the safest move.
